An Excerpt From My Book

This is a book that I have been working on for a while now.  It doesn't have a name yet.  This is the section where my main character meets the antagonist of the story.  Critiques and suggestions are absolutely welcome!!!

The thing that happened next was quite possibly the most terrifying moment of my life.  I met darkness.  Not the kind that fills your room at night, or the kind that puts the world to sleep.  Not the kind of darkness any of you have ever seen before.  No, this darkness was something no blanket or mom can protect you from.

This darkness was alive.  And it was staring me right in the face.

She appeared in front of me, hatred rolling off of her in waves so thick that it nearly suffocated me.  I stood there frozen to my spot on the marble flooring.  Her figure was cloaked in an intricate black lace cloak.  She began to circle me and I spun in place, never letting my back face her front.

Abruptly, she stopped.  She unbuttoned the button at her neck and spread her arms wide, the cloak falling from her shoulders.

She had at least six inches on me in the heeled black boots she was wearing and I had to crane my neck to look at her.  Her eyes were completely black just like a spider’s.  The paleness of her skin made her look like a ghost and her blood red lips made her look even fairer.

A black dress that looked like a wedding gown in reverse came just above her knees in the front but flowed far behind her in the back.

“Dear, dear, dear,” she crooned softly, her voice deep and strong, “Quit your trembling, I won’t kill you… today.”

You won’t ever touch me!” I spit out, nearly choking on the poison in my words, “You are evil, and evil will have no power over me.  Now or ever.”  My mouth was babbling freely now, as though I had said these words dozens of times before.  She laughed in a laugh that would match every description of an evil witch’s laugh you have ever heard.

A fury ignited in my chest that slowly unfurled into something large and fiery and passionate.

“Oh darling girl.  So ignorant for someone so confident.  Of course we can’t harm you yet.  We have to wait for your powers to be unlocked first.  Then you will become my little pawn, and when we’re through with you, you will be burned at the stake.”

“Man.  I have no clue how I could pass up that offer, but…” she struck me hard across the face and I involuntarily let out a shriek.

“How dare you speak to me in such a casual tone!?  You should be bowing down at my feet.”

I should have really kept my mouth shut, but I just couldn’t resist putting my foot in my mouth once more, “Umm, no thanks.  You might be a queen, but that doesn’t mean that your feet smell good or anything.” If her eyes could have gotten any wider I swear they would have fallen right out of her sockets.

“You stupid, insolent little girl,” she made a fist with her hand and suddenly I felt my throat tightening and my breath came in short gasps, causing the witch to smile.

“Let.  Me.  Go!” I choked out.  Then my throat was released and my breathing slowly became easy and quiet.

“Shut up!  I am the master and you shall listen to me!The master…  Where had I heard that?  Ms. Lacey.  Ms. Lacey had said that.

“Not as easy to catch as you thought, am I?” I smirked, shoving every shred of self-preservation and common sense I had right out of my mind, “You sent those leather men after me.”

She inhaled sharply, “That was simply a test.  To see if you were as good at protecting yourself as they said you would be.”

“What, was sending back my dead principal to test my mental health?”

“You could look at it that way.”  She grinned.

“What do you want?”

“Simply to see you… before you become my most useful tool ever.”

“Are you pleased?  Maybe a haircut or something before-hand…”

She seemed to ignore my last comment.

“You must return to your world now.  I’ll see you soon.”

“Not if I have anything to do with it you self-serving, malevolent,” - my long string of insults was abruptly cut off as I was jarred back into my hallway, landing on my rear end.

Book Review: Illusion by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Synopsis-  Nick Gautier is a sixteen year old boy with everyday problems: girls, bullies, and school.  And, oh yeah, how could I forget?  He is the Malachai, the most powerful evil demon in all the world, created to hate, kill, and have no love.  But Nick is different.  He was born to a human mother who loves him more than anything else in the world.  Nick wants to stop himself from becoming the evil being that e hates more than anything, before he kills everyone he loves.

Before I begin, this is the fifth book in the Chronicles of Nick series, so if you haven't read them I HIGHLY recommend it (The first book in the series is called Infinity).  You will fall in love with them.

Phew... Okay... Compose yourself, Regan... You are fully capable of not squealing without abandon while writing this review.  *mature hat on*

Okay, first I think I will begin with the writing style.  Sherrilyn Kenyon is absolutely ingenious.  She is able to tell a story that could be quite dark and twisted in a tone that is upbeat and funny.  You never feel like you are reading a helplessly miserable story wrapped with a bow of torture; it's actually quite the opposite.  And that plot twist, nearly impossible to pull off.

Now for the characters.  Nick is adorable.  He is funny and loving and nothing like a Malachai, but everything like a real life sixteen year old.  Kody is every bit as awesome.  She is a very strong female character, and is very important to the story.  Caleb, although not present in much of this book, still seems very important when he is there.  And Simi.  Simi, Simi, Simi.  What can I say?  Simi is just as beautifully hilarious as ever.  Even the evil demons in this story you can't help but love.

This is just an overall for the characters,  everyone's past is beginning to be seriously revealed in this book.

I know this was a fairly short review, but all I have to say is how amazing this book was.  I seriously recommend it!!!  It was definitely worth the read (and the year long wait).

AHHHHH!!!!   I absolutely, positively cannot wait another nanosecond for Sherrilyn Kenyon's new Chronicles of Nick book, Illusion.  BUT, instead of waiting a nanosecond I guess I will have to wait another WEEK...  Not too sure how I will do it...  Okay... Rant over...

About My Writing

Hello!!  So, this will not be a review.  I just want to take this post to talk about my writing.

I have been writing ever since I was about seven.  Within this past year or so, writing has really become important to me and I have started taking it a lot more seriously.  I have even come to consider it as a career option.  I enjoy writing all types of fiction (mostly things of the magic-y sort) and some types of sci-fi.

I hope to be posting some sections of my most recent story (if I don't, you know, chicken out first, that is)....  If anyone else is a writer and is working on something, feel free to send it to me via email, if you want.

Movie Review: Divergent

Synopsis: Beatrice (Tris) Prior lives in a futuristic Chicago where society is split up into five factions (or groups) based on personality traits.  (Dauntless- Bravery, Amity- Kindness or peacefulness, Candor- Honesty, Abnegation- Selflessness, and Erudite- Intelligence).  When you turn sixteen you take an aptitude test to tell you which faction you belong in.  Tris's results come up inconclusive making her Divergent, which means she doesn't fit into one of the categories, and that is a dangerous things to be.  On choosing day Tris leaves her family in Abnegation and joins Dauntless.  The story follows her through her journey in becoming Dauntless, along with her relationship with her instructor Four.

What can I say?  This movie was A-MAZ-ING!!!!  Being a huge fan of the book, I was absolutely terrified that this movie would fall through the cracks into what I like to call the....dun, dun, duuuuuun...  book-to-movie-adaption-curse.  BUT, much to my surprise, this YA book was one of the extremely few exceptions to the afore mentioned curse that seemingly all books of the fiction variety fall into when transferred into movies.

None of the important scenes or characters (cough, cough, The Hunger Games) were left out, nor did there seem to be any gaping plot holes.  No unnecessary scenes were added in, either (also, cough, cough, The Hunger Games).  Some lines seemed to be pulled directly from the book.

The acting in this movie was nothing short of spectacular.  Every actor portrayed their part (big or small) beautifully.  AND the actors fit their character descriptions extremely well.  I felt that I was actually watching the book come to life, which, to me, is very important in a book to movie adaptation since you are making an author's words become a visual.

The camera work and special effects in this movie were also great and nothing felt overly done or cheesy.

And don't even get me started on Tris and Four.  Let's just say my squealing inner fangirl self was definitely happy at the end of the movie.

Overall, I would rate this movie a bajillion on the awesomeness scale.  (And, yes, it was so amazing I had to create my own number).  I definitely recommend this movie and cannot wait for the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Synopsis:  Hazel is a sixteen year old terminal cancer patient who just wants to be normal.  Then one day the handsome Augustus Waters enters Hazel's cancer support group and everything begins to change.

Let me start off by saying that this was one of the most amazingly written books I have read in my entire life.  It really makes you think.  It was truly beautiful and unforgettable and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Everyone knows someone who has had cancer or has lost their lives to it.  When I read this book, I was immediately reminded of the feelings you would have for a real person with cancer.  That is one of the best things about this book.  Nothing is glamourized or dramatized.  Everything is very raw and real and relatable and nothing feels forced.

The writing style used by John Green is beautiful and very interesting.  It isn't one of those books that is told from the point of view of a teenage girl but then they suddenly say something a thirty year old man would say.  You actually feel like Hazel- a sixteen year old girl- is telling you a story.

Also, the romance between Hazel and Augustus doesn't feel forced or overly poetic.  It is sweet and seems very realistic and believable.

While this book doesn't portray great Christian values, it does show the importance of living like it's your last day and never taking anyone or anything for granted, because you never know when things might change for the worst.

Yes, this book is also very, very, very sad.  I don't recommend it to people who haven't read books with mature content before or don't like sad books.  But if those things don't bother you and you are at least thirteen (I wouldn't recommend it to anyone younger because of the inappropriate language and a few adult themes) I definitely suggest giving The Fault in Our Stars a try.
